May/June
We will complete the school year with our final fifth book in our reading series. The stories are longer with more complex sentence structure. The study of long vowels and vowel combinations will continue during this final unit. We are all working to improve our comprehension by working with Accelerated Reader and weekly comprehension skills. Our class has been working in social studies learning how things change over time. We have looked at some of our country's history as well as how we each change. The students will be making a personal timeline. Watch the homework steno for more information. We will end the year back in our science book learning about the states of matter-solids, liquids, gases. In Math, students have been learning about money and time. We will practice adding coins and will practice telling time on the hour and half hour. We will also learning about geometric shapes in two dimensions(plane shapes) and three dimensions (solids). As mentioned in a letter a few weeks ago, we will be grading students on their completion of SmartMath activities. Please see that your child regularly works on the program so that s/he will be ready on testing day. Test days will be announced in the class newsletter. Our religion lessons have helped us learn about the church's Lenten practices. We celebrate Easter and the Easter season for the next several weeks. Our PE classes will help students learn good nutritional habits as well as good physical habits. We will practice coordination and keeping time to music. Students will practice rhythms with and without music.
First Grade Snacks In order to help promote healthy snacks, students will receive a "punch" in their class punch card when they bring and eat a snack from the monthly snack group. Fill your punch card and earn a trip to the class treasure box! Your bonus is a healthier child! Students may bring a healthy snack from any of the food groups for the remainder of the school year.
